When I worked at the UW Madison Arboretum I had a front row seat on the meticulous work of prairie creation and maintenance. I've wondered ever since how that same attention, care, and respect for land might be cultivated for Earth in general. What better place to focus, I wondered, than in some of the most taken-for-granted space we humans create: stormwater infrastructure. In this presentation, I talk about "orphaned space" as a way to question the ecological and social impacts of infrastructure spaces, and open up opportunities to see them as connected to some of our most cherished restored and wild places.
